Let’s be honest: food blogging takes a lot more effort than just posting a recipe online. There’s research, recipe testing, documenting each step, and taking mouthwatering photos. On top of that, making the recipe look good on your blog (and optimizing it for search engines) can feel like an overwhelming task, especially if you’re starting from scratch every time.

That’s why having a reusable recipe blog post template is a game-changer. It simplifies the process, saves you time, and ensures your posts look polished and professional every time. Combine that with WP Recipe Maker’s recipe cards, and you’ve got a system designed to make your life easier. In this article, we’ll show you how to build this framework and elevate your recipe posts for both readers and search engines!

We’re going to break it all down for you so you can write posts that work as hard as you do, without the stress!

How to build a winning recipe blog post structure

Writing recipe posts can be unnecessarily complicated. You’re trying to make it look great, help readers follow along, and keep Google happy all at the same time. But here’s the thing: having a reliable recipe blog post template can take the pressure off. With a little structure, you can save time, stay consistent, and create posts that make your readers hungry for more (literally).

Start with a hero photo and a quick recipe overview

Okay, we know you shouldn’t judge a book by its cover, but sometimes it has to be done. Nothing grabs attention like a gorgeous shot of the finished dish. It’s like the cover of a cookbook and your first chance to hook people at first glance. Pair that hero photo with a quick summary: prep time, cook time, servings, and a “Jump to Recipe” button for folks who want the TL;DR version.

Write a short, snappy introduction

Your intro doesn’t need to be a novel. A few sentences about what makes this dish special (like its history, your personal twist, or why it’s a family favorite) does the job. Keep it light, keep it fun, and move on.

Share your recipe experience

Here’s where you can really connect with your readers. Talk about what happened when you made the recipe: Did you nail it the first time? Were there any surprises? What tweaks did you make to improve it? Sharing this kind of stuff makes your post feel personal and builds trust. Plus, it’s great for SEO. Sharing personal insights and experiences adds expertise, authority, and trustworthiness (E-E-A-T in the SEO world). This makes your content more valuable to readers and helps search engines recognize it as high-quality, which can boost your rankings.

Lay out the ingredients (and substitutions!)

No one likes searching for an impossible-to-find ingredient. List your ingredients clearly and offer substitutions when you can (like “swap Greek yogurt for sour cream” or “use almond flour instead of regular.”) Bonus points if you include an “ingredient roundup” photo to show everything at a glance.

Walk them through the steps

Before you drop the recipe card, take readers through the process step-by-step. Pretend you’re explaining it to a friend: be casual, clear, and not overly fussy. Throw in some photos of the important steps (like “what the batter should look like” or “how to fold the dough”) so they feel confident following along.

Add a recipe card

A recipe card, like those offered by WP Recipe Maker, can make your posts look polished and improve your blog’s SEO. With the right tool, you can:

  • Include clear steps, ingredients, and cooking times.
  • Display automatically calculated nutrition facts for convenience.
  • Allow readers to toggle between metric and imperial units.
  • Enable schema markup to help your recipes appear in Google’s rich snippets.

End with tips, FAQs, or extras

Got some leftover wisdom to share? Use the space under your recipe card for storage tips, common cooking mistakes, or FAQs. Readers love this kind of practical advice, and it’s a great way to wrap things up without cluttering the main post.

Structuring your process shots and tips

Although process shots are aesthetic, that’s not all they’re used for. They show readers exactly what to expect at important moments in your recipe. The right visuals can guide someone through a tricky step, make your blog look professional, and improve SEO. Here’s how to create process shots that work:

Focus on the key moments

Not every step needs a photo, but some are essential. Show the sauce’s texture, the color of perfectly browned onions, or how to fold dough properly. These photos answer readers’ “Am I doing this right?” questions while cooking.

Keep it consistent

Using the same backdrop, lighting, and camera angles for all your photos will instantly make your blog look more polished. Simple setups with natural light and neutral surfaces work best. Consistency also makes your posts easier for readers to follow.

Add captions that explain

Every photo should come with a short, clear caption. Whether it’s “Mix until smooth” or “This is how the dough should look after kneading,” captions help readers understand what’s happening and avoid confusion.

Limit the number of photos

More isn’t always better. Aim for 4 to 8 photos that focus on the most important steps. Too many pictures can overwhelm readers, while too few might leave them confused.

  1. Hi there, thank you for the great post!
Swapped from WP tasty to WP Recipe maker in January – Wished I had done it Sooner!!!!

Question – what are your thoughts on Ingredient images? are they still needed? I see some bloggers still doing them and labelling the images, and I see some just doing a bullet point list for the ingredients. Just wondering if you had any thoughts on what would be the best approach following the google update?

    1. Hi Meg,

Very happy to hear you’re enjoying the plugin!

SEO wise, I don’t think ingredient images will make much of a difference. I wouldn’t recommend using them for SEO reasons, only if it fits your site and the audience you’re aiming at. If your visitors mostly consists of absolute beginners, having ingredient images could be helpful for example.

      Kind regards,
      Brecht
